Let's discover how to greet in Filipino.
Speaker 1: Hello! Are you excited to learn Tagalog?
Speaker 2: Yes, but I don't know where to start.
Speaker 1: Don't worry tutulungan kita.
Speaker 2: Oh, Thank You!
Speaker 1: Walang anuman!
Speaker 1: Okay, let's start with the greetings. We usually hear "Mabuhay", that means "long-live" or "Hello". It's customary for us to say mabuhay in the Philippines. However, as the language transforms, we also accept Taglish, a mix of Tag- (meaning Tagalog) and -Lish (from the word English), since there are words in English that have no direct translation in Filipino.
For the greetings, we accept Hi! and Hello! as well.
But it is usually followed by "Kamusta?" or "Kumusta", it's a way of saying "How are you?".
If you're doing good or well, you may answer as "Mabuti"; if not, "Hindi mabuti". "Okay" and "Hindi okay" are also acceptable.
If you want to ask the person back. You'll say, "Ikaw, kamusta ka?"
If you want to be more polite, you may add in English. "I'm fine, thank you for asking." or "Mabuti, maraming salamat sa pagtatanong."
Speaker 2: Can we try?
Speaker 1: Sure! Hi, kamusta ka?
Speaker 2: Mabuti, maraming salamat sa pagtatanong. Ikaw, kamusta?
Speaker 1: Mabuti rin.
